Nigeria Police Force Takes Proactive Steps to Combat Cybercrime
The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeola Egbetokun, has directed the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) to intensify its efforts against individuals and groups involved in cybercrime. This directive is timely, considering the rising trend of cybercrime in Nigeria.
Cybersecurity Awareness Initiative
As part of the 2024 Global Cybersecurity Awareness Week, themed "Secure Our World," CP Uche Ifeanyi Henry, Director of NPF-NCCC, led a sensitization visit to Police Day Secondary School in Abuja. The goal of this visit was to educate teenagers on cyber safety, the dangers of cybercrime, and how to protect themselves online.
Objectives of the Initiative
The NPF-NCCC aims to:
- Educate school teenagers on cybercrime risks and consequences
- Provide online safety tips
- Prevent cybercriminals from recruiting young minds
- Prevent young people from falling prey to cybercriminals who seek to recruit and mentor them into illicit activities such as sextortion and romance scams.
Building a Resilient Digital Community
This initiative is part of the center's broader mandate to combat cybercrime and protect Nigeria's digital landscape. By educating teenagers, the NPF-NCCC hopes to build a stronger, more resilient digital community and prevent the spread of cybercrime.
